Does Your Business Need Custom Software?

These days, it seems as though everyone is having custom software developed for their company, but do you actually need it?

Many companies are taking advantage of the efficiencies gained from bespoke software such as not needing to pay any more expensive licencing fees, and having software be perfectly suited to their processes rather than needing to work around the software.

For some companies this is perfect. They save money in the long-term, and get a product which is designed with them in mind. For other companies however, it isn’t an efficient use of resources. For example, if you were a small business then you absolutely would not need a custom accounting package. If you were a local artist then you likely don’t need complex analytics software that optimises your Instagram posting. And a coffee shop won’t need a custom checkout process.

small-businessWith that said, there are instances where companies of every size can take advantage of custom software. The small business may not need a custom accounts package, but it could be very helpful to have all their data automatically transformed into a monthly report - possibly something that they were already doing manually. The local artist doesn’t need advanced analytics, but maybe they could do with something to help schedule their posts? Custom software doesn’t always mean complex software.

Of course, it’s hard for a business to identify where and when custom software is necessary, and whether it’s an appropriate solution. Our rule of thumb is that when you find yourself either slowed down by the existing software you use, or when you have to bend your workflow to fit into what off the shelf software does, then it’s time to consider creating software that fits your specific needs.

Here at Primitive Social, we love helping clients work out where custom software can fit into their business, and how it can improve their work. The best part is that you don’t even need to replace everything in one go. Often you can start with just one small area to improve and take it from there. This is a great way to see if custom software is right for you, and without consuming too much budget.

If this sounds like something of interest to you and your budget, contact us today and we can work together on improving your unique business goals.
