Name: Jessica Hicks
Position: Director of Client services
Location: Orange County, California
Job Description:

Over the last 4 months I helped organize and structure our new service line, growth driven design. One of my main focuses is ensuring we have a healthy process for client communication throughout a client's entire life cycle: sales, onboarding, retainer, off-boarding or renewal. Our team does a great job building relationships, but my role moving forward will focus on all of our services lines and enhancing the experience so that we can show added value to our clients across the board. I will be a support to our team, and to the client.

Tell me a little bit about your background:

My first leadership role started when I worked for American Golf Corporation. I was there for over ten years running sales, client relations, and the backend of the business. It is where I really developed the foundations for understanding operations and what it means to deliver a good client experience. However, my life became really unbalanced during my time there. I was working crazy hours, sometimes 3 days in a row of 14-16 hour days, and not seeing my family. It was a long hard hours, weekends, holidays, everyday! One of the greatest lessons for me was that I had to find work/life balance. For my mental and physical health, family health, and work health.

How did you find Primitive Social?

At the time, I wasn’t necessarily looking for a job, but I was really unhappy with my current employment and was actively praying for contentment. I had left AGC to go to Houzz. A great company, but a downgrade in an attempt to slow down. I was very unfulfilled and felt purposeless. One day I was at lunch with a few Houzz girlfriends when another girl in the office decided to sit with us. We were talking about our kids, and who knows what else when I made a comment “I wish I could just work from home.” Later, that random girl told me to apply at her friends company. I brushed her off immediately thinking, why would I apply to a company out in Texas? They would never hire me. The interesting part is she kept pushing me and all I could think was, who is this girl?

A few days later I sent in my resume, what felt like a week later I was talking to my now counterpart Heather, and a day later Kade. Within two weeks I had a new job and a new purpose. I truly believe God answered my prayers by sending me Primitive Social and now I think of that random girl as God’s messenger.

What are your favorite parts of your job?

Being remote. That this company and my role, bring out all the best parts of me, my talents, strengths, and creative energy. My team.

What are some challenges you’ve faced since starting with Primitive Social?

There are always challenges no matter where you go. I think the hardest obstacle for me to overcome my initial transition from being in an office everyday and transitioning to remote life. But I am so connected to the team, that it is one of my favorite parts of what I get to do. I don’t think I could ever go back to full time office life.

Okay, now let’s talk more about you. What’s your daily routine?

I am usually up around 5am each day either working, getting myself together, walking my dog or reading. After that I spend about an hour with my kids before they go off to school and daycare, then start my true work day typically no later than 7am (9am Texas time). My days are filled with client work, troubleshooting, and meetings- lots of meetings. I usually get to end my day early enough in the evening so I always have time to make dinner, make a baseball game, a bible study, help with homework or just be Mom.jessica-and-husband

What do you like to do outside of the office?

Spend time with my family. My husband, my 3 year old Wyatt, my 7 year old Westin and my dog Hudson. We are always outside doing something. At a sporting event, volunteering at church, bbqing, or hanging with family and friends.jessica-children-and-dog

What is something not everyone knows about you?

One day, I want to open up my own coffee shop. I am obsessed with cute boutique style shops. I would love to build a christian coffee shop franchise. I’ve imagined every detail and what it could be, it will happen one day. I would also like to write a few christian books for kids and families.

Who do you admire?

Jesus. And my husband. I admire his compassion and care for our family. He is such a devoted Dad, I really admire his love and support for us. I have also always admired my Dad, he instilled such a grit within me. He taught me what it means to have character. He never bailed me out when he knew I could problem solve on my own, he kept me busy in sports and out of trouble. He raised me to care more about those around me than myself. I bought my own car, paid my way through college with scholarship support and no debt. I was caretaking for my Dementiad grandmother in Highschool and long after until she passed. At the time I didn’t always understand why he had me do certain things, but I look back now and just think- wow.

How do you stay motivated?

I don’t like to fail. I would say I am motivated by my fear of failure. Doing a good job motivates me, and knowing it was done right with care and precision. I also have an incredible amount of respect for Kade and what he has built. I care for everyone at Primitive and so much want to see us all succeed. I want to do a good job for PS and for my team.
