Internship programs tend to be viewed through some pretty strong stigmas. Depending upon which movie you’ve watched, you either have thoughts of jerky bosses, bumbling interns, countless cups of coffee, or sweet old men you wish were your grandpa. Regardless of which stereotype you’ve witnessed, you probably feel like an intern program has little to offer when it comes to growing your business.
The reality, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. While it’s very likely your internship program will involve several cups of coffee, the rest of the aforementioned stigmas don’t have to be the norm. In fact, when you approach an internship program with planning and intentionality, you might just find that it serves to better your team and grow your business.
Reasons to Invest in an Internship Program
Still not convinced it’s worth it to invest in an intern program? Here are the top three reasons we think it’s more than worth it, and why we will continue to invest in ours for years to come.
Develop Future Talent
Without a doubt, our top reason for investing in our intern program has been the opportunity to develop talent that we can hire once the internship is complete. It’s not a guarantee that you will hire every person who comes through your program, but think about what a great opportunity it presents. How many past hiring mistakes could have been avoided with a little more time and exposure for both parties? An intern program gives both you and interns time to get to know one another and determine if this person is the right fit for your team.
Improve Culture and Processes
When we think about intern programs, it can be easy to assume the business is the one with everything to offer the interns. Again, this could not be further from the truth. Each intern that comes through your program presents a new insight and perspective on how to improve your work and your culture (and how to keep improving your intern program!), so take advantage of it and listen to what they have to say. Then work with your team to evaluate the feedback and apply it accordingly.
Build Strong Community Partnerships
Finally, investing in an intern program presents a unique chance to build strategic relationships within your community. We believe one sign of a healthy business is how they are able to serve and improve the city they call home. Investing in an internship program allows you to build partnerships with colleges, universities, and employment centers, and provides a means to build up high-quality talent that can enter your community’s workforce.
Think intern programs are best left to other businesses and just aren’t for you? Think again. Investing in an internship program will serve your community and your company.
